Nicolas Sarkozy’s Checklist

Nicholas Sarkozy

Nicholas Sarkozy, the incumbent President of France, has been given a checklist to observe when he visits Queen Elizabeth on March 28, 2008. It was a thorough and cumbersome list.

Advisory notes contained references to the following:

  1. To leave the Rolex watch and Ray-Ban sunglasses in Paris. The British Royalty was known to disapprove on bling exhibitionisms.
  2. Picking up any kind of fights with members of the public can not be condoned. This was in reference to Sarkozy’s direct rebuttal when he was scoffed by a man in public. One French national newspaper carried the video clip of the incident online and it was a big hit.
  3. A President may always be a President, disregarding the cut of his cloth but for the sake of protocol and the preservation of Sarkozy’s power image, his aides have laid down the guideline that requested Sarkozy to refrain from giving interviews while he was wearing jogging shorts. It was simply inappropriate to mix leisure with business.
  4. Another faux pas was about reading and sending text messages while inside a top-level meeting. Sarkozy was immune to the irreverent behavior of communicating via text while in the presence of the Pope.
  5. Sarkozy had already raised eyebrows by reducing the prearranged stay at Windsor Castle. One could imagine what this act might trigger in terms of the analysis of the reason behind this slight. A reconciliatory diplomat may forgive this and not take it to heart that it was an intended snub.

Sarkozy has often proved that he would have his own way. It remains doubtful whether he would allow himself to be reprimanded. The advice offered by his image gurus might fall on deaf ears
