Heywood St James, playing on home ground in Heywood, near Rochdale, took on Salford Victoria in Division One of the Bridgewater Office Supplies Football League, which covers Greater Manchester. Both teams stood on equal par in the league.

Astonishing photos below.

Two amateur football teams started playing and immediately, there was a verbal altercation between 2 players. The referee sent one player off but he was dissatisfied. He returned and within seconds, the opposing teams were trading punches. Fans joined in the melee by hurling chairs. A trainer was struck and suffered facial injuries as well as a broken finger.

The referee tried his best to diffuse the quarrel but he was outnumbered and disrespected. One player even walked around the field brandishing a plank of wood. It was intimidating. In the safety of our internet terminals, he looked ridiculous in the photos carrying the slab like a french loaf. It might have been no laughing matter if he had used the wood as a weapon.

The police are investigating claims before making charges. It sounded serious with affray, criminal damage and assault allegations thrown in. No arrests have been made. To be fair and square to both teams?
